The earliest records of Colorado’s corporate registrations date back to the territorial era, when handwritten ledgers were kept at the Secretary of State’s office. These logs, filled with names in Spanish, French, and English, reflected a melting pot of settlers and reflected the state’s early legal framework.
By the late twentieth century, the sheer volume of filings and the growing demand for public access prompted a move to digitization. In 1999, Colorado pioneered an online searchable database, allowing anyone to query a company’s filing status, officers, and incorporation dates in real time.
